In a story for the Harvard Business Review, #NYUTandon visiting research professor of Innovation, Design and Organizational Studies in the Department of Technology Management and Innovation Anne-Laure Fayard and The Dock researcher Martina Mendola, PhD outline the 3-stage process that makes universities prime innovators— drawing on their experiences from New York University and the DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Both the NYU Tandon Future Labs and the Prototyping Fund, a collaborative program provided by the Design Lab @ NYU MakerSpace and NYU Entrepreneurial Institute are brought up as examples of how universities can progressively leverage their resources, capabilities, and networks to foster innovation not only by students and faculty, but also by actors in their broader communities. #NYUTandon Associate Professor Justin Cappos (CSE) spoke with Business Insider about AWS changing its data-deletion process after Apple flagged a potential security risk:"It's a difficult problem," Justin Cappos, a computer science professor at NYU, told BI. "Cloud providers need to treat this as a serious feature that they provide to customers because the customers should have the right to control their data, where it's distributed, how long it lives, and more importantly, when it is removed." In a breakthrough study led by Joseph Chow, #NYUTandon Institute Associate Professor of Civil and Urban Engineering and Deputy Director of the USDOT Tier 1 University Transportation Center C2SMARTER Center, transportation experts propose a novel algorithm aimed at revolutionizing the way ride-pooling services operate — with a particular focus on the integration of transfers within the system. Transfers, the process of passengers switching between vehicles during their journey, have long been identified as a potential strategy to enhance service availability and fleet efficiency. Yet, the implementation of transfers poses a highly complex routing problem, one that has largely been overlooked in existing literature. The research team's solution comes in the form of a state-of-the-art dynamic routing algorithm, designed to incorporate synchronized intramodal transfers seamlessly into the ride-pooling experience. Unlike traditional approaches that focus solely on immediate decisions, the proposed algorithm adopts a forward-looking perspective, taking into account the long-term implications of routing choices.
